WHAT IS MOTOWN?

Berry Gordy, as you may recall, was the FJ! answer on 9/15/2020, which resulted in much controversy over his first name. Today, thankfully, it’s about the record company Gordy founded when he was about 30 years old. Up until then, Gordy had tried several occupations, from boxing to working at the Lincoln-Mercury car factory while, at the same time, writing songs and nurturing his recording company vision. “I wanted to have a kid off the street walk in one door unknown and come out another door a star, like an assembly line,” he has said, “that was my dream.”

To that end, Gordy put the car assembly line principles to good use when in 1959, he set up his record company, initially Tamla Records. The following year, the company was incorporated as Motown Record Corporation. Gordy took raw talent from the streets of Detroit (the Motor City) and groomed their talents and stage presence, launching them on to international stardom– and the hits just kept on coming. Motown had over 75 Top 10 records on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1960s from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations, the Four Tops and many more.

Pasquale came up with 8 Mile, actually an Eminem film. (His record company is Shady Records). Pasquale bet nothing, standing pat on $4,900.

Isaac got it right. He bet $3,101, bringing him up to $9,801.

Leah also got it right. She bet $5,000 and won the game with $12,600. Leah Wiegand is a semi-finalist. Pasquale and Isaac won $5,000 each.
